Plymouth Gin

The premium spirit brand Plymouth Gin has a fascinating history spanning more than 200 years. The world famous gin is still produced at the famous Black Friars distillery, right in the heart of the city and as you would imagine, this iconic local producer attracts visitors from across the globe.

A tour of the working distillery culminates with visitor sampling at The Refectory, a grade 2* listed building constructed in 1410. The Refectory also acts as an exclusive members-only cocktail bar and is a popular destination for the City’s professionals.

Our brief was to create a new bar that exemplified the brand experience. Combining the exuberance and quality of the product with the history and uniqueness of the city (and indeed its people) became the essence of the project.

The long and impressive Refectory Room needed a bar that complimented its proportion and grandeur. The nine meter walnut counter sits centrally and comfortably in the room, with highly finished timber contrasting with the more rustic and historic finishes of the original building. A simple back bar is well lit and provides a neutral backdrop that allows the product to be the centre of attention. At the bar front customers can enjoy the warmth and luxury of the solid timbers, curves and contours. Of course a successful cocktail bar must allow staff to work effectively and efficiently. A high level of customer service requires attention to detail. We worked very closely with the bar team to ensure the back bar was designed to suit their current and future needs.

Our wide experience in the hospitality and catering sector allowed us to build into the bar custom made design solutions. Ice buckets, ingredient storage and counter level lighting all ensure bar staff have everything they need and within easy reach to efficiently work a busy shift. Working with trusted local specialist contractors allows Fruition to provide high levels of service at a competitive price. The client is actively involved throughout the process of development and can make adjustments as we progress with manufacture. We are proud to say that the team of ‘Fruition Fitters’ (including metal fabricators, joiners, electricians and plumbers) pulled together as a dedicated and efficient team, ensuring the bar was only out of action for one weekend.

Plymouth Gin now has a destination cocktail bar that manifests the brands’ values and provides visitors with a world-class customer experience.
